OUTER SPACE

Here are some ideas for earning the Outer Space badge.  Some activities are designed to be done in a patrol or unit, others are designed to be done at home.

Suggestions have been split into ideas for Guides aged under 10 and Guides aged over 10, but feel free to mix and match - as long as it is a challenge for the individual girl!

Under 10

Do some cooking with a space theme.  There are some ideas halfway down this page.

Dress up one member of your patrol as an alien.

Imagine that all humans had to move to Mars - draw the sort of house that you might live in, and the sort of outfits you might wear.  Remember that no part of your skin is allowed to touch the air on Mars.

Make a spaceship out of cardboard boxes, toilet rolls and alfoil.  Or there are lots of other outer space craft ideas here.

Make your own rocket by following these instructions.

Use playdough to make models of the planets.

Know the order of the planets and make up your own mnemonic (eg. My Very Energetic Mother Jumps Straight Up Nightly).

Be able to use a ball and a torch (or two balls) to show how the earth goes around the sun.

Over 10

Be able to draw the Southern Cross, and show that you can find it in the sky.  Be able to find at least one other constellation.  There is some information here.
