Here are some ideas for earning the Homes badge.  Some activities are designed to be done in a patrol or unit, others are designed to be done at home.

Suggestions have been split into ideas for Guides aged under 10 and Guides aged over 10, but feel free to mix and match - as long as it is a challenge for the individual girl!

Under 10

Build a bird’s nest using only natural materials – make sure it is sturdy and soft.

Learn about kitchen safety.  Be able to explain how to handle knives, stoves and pots safely. There is some information here.

Play some games on this home safety website.  Or print and complete some safety worksheets from here.

Demonstrate how to use matches safely to light a candle.

Have a discussion with your patrol about different types of houses (eg igloos, teepees, huts) and build a model of a house.

Draw a map of your house and show the way from bedroom to a door in case of fire.

Draw a picture of everyone who lives in your house - discuss with your unit the different families that people have.

Pick one extra job to do around the house and do that for a week.

Over 10

Make a game of Concentration for your patrol to play where half the cards have the name of a country and the other half have a picture the type of house most common in that country.

Draw a map of your house and show the way from bedroom to an outside door in case of fire.

Create your ideal bedroom in a shoebox.

Have a discussion with your patrol about fire safety in the home.

Learn where fuse box and the water meter are in your home.

Pick one extra job to do around the house and do that for a week.

Have everyone in your patrol take turns telling 2 true statements and 1 false statement about their home to the patrol. Try to guess which statement is untrue.

Know how to use basic household equipment – have a parent sign that you can safely use the microwave, washing machine, television, dishwasher and oven.
