HANDS

Here are some ideas for earning the Hands badge.  Some activities are designed to be done in a patrol or unit, others are designed to be done at home.

Suggestions have been split into ideas for Guides aged under 10 and Guides aged over 10, but feel free to mix and match - as long as it is a challenge for the individual girl!

Under 10

Trace your hand on a piece of paper and on each finger write or draw a person who you love and who you can lean on if you ever 'need a hand'.

Trace your other hand on a piece of paper and on each finger write or draw something you can do to 'lend a hand' to someone.

Learn to finger spell your name.  Here is the Auslan alphabet.

Make some finger puppets and do a performance.  There are some instructions for finger puppets here.

Find out how many bones there are in an adult hand.  There is some information here.

Learn a magic trick that involves 'sleight of hand'.  This website has some good ideas.

Find a partner and take turns being each others arms and feeding and giving drinks to each other.

Make a craft completely from scratch.

Over 10

Participate in improvisation with a partner where one person sits on a chair with their arms behind their back, and the other girl stands behind acting as the arms of the girl on the chair.

As a patrol, have each person trace their hand on a piece of a paper.  Each girl then writes something nice about you on a finger of your hand.

Demonstrate how to sew a button on fabric.

Organise two chairs in a line.  The girl in the back chair has a bowl of icecream and must feed it to the girl in front.

Find out how many bones there are in an adult hand.  There is some information here.

Be able to finger spell your name, the names of other people in your patrol and the name of your patrol.  The Auslan alphabet can be found here.

Learn how to make shadow puppets and put on a show.  Here are some examples.
