GIRLS

Here are some ideas for earning the Girls badge.  Some activities are designed to be done in a patrol or unit, others are designed to be done at home.

Suggestions have been split into ideas for Guides aged under 10 and Guides aged over 10, but feel free to mix and match - as long as it is a challenge for the individual girl!

Under 10

Come up with 10 reasons in your patrol why Guides with just girls is better than if boys were allowed in too.

Make a piece of jewellery – this site has great ideas on the right hand side, and there are some more ideas here.

Interview your mum or any adult female friend and find out some interesting things about her life.  This site has a number of good suggestions for questions to ask.

Have a discussion with your patrol or unit about what you want to be when you grow up.  Talk about how women historically weren't able to do all the same jobs as men but now they can.  Some historical background can be found here.

Have someone come and talk about growing up or being a girl in another country.

Use cut out dolls to learn about different national costumes.  Some templates can be found on this website.

With your unit, learn about how girls can be good friends to each other.  Find out how good a friend you are by doing the quiz on page 61 of this download.

Do a 'warm fuzzies activity' with your patrol.  Draw a large tree on A4 paper, then use these leaves to write nice things about the other members of your patrol.  They will do the same for you and you can glue your leaves onto your friendship tree.

Over 10

Draw your vision of a girl – label what she is wearing or what she is carrying.  Discuss why you picked those things.  Talk about how fashion/beauty change - for some examples, read this site.

Write down three of your own hopes and three of your own fears.  Then imagine what those of a girl in other countries would be – America, South Africa, Sudan, Bosnia, Switzerland, India are some ideas.  To learn a bit about each country, visit these country profiles.

List 10 reasons why being a girl is better than being a boy.

Start an anonymous box in your unit where questions can be written from anyone, and discussed among the girls.

Make a piece of jewellery – this site has great ideas on the right hand side, and there are some more ideas here.

Find out about 2 vitamins/nutrients that are important for girls in particular and know some foods that contain them.  For some information, visit here and here.

Have a debate between patrols whether boys should be allowed in Guides.

Have a ‘girly night’ with your unit or patrol.  Some ideas for things to do can be found homemade beauty products, face masks and soaps/lip glosses.

Pick a woman you admire (in your life or from history) and tell your patrol 5 things about them.

With your patrol, do a Crystal Palace rally re-enactment in mime.  For details of the Crystal Palace rally, read this summary.
