FITNESS

Here are some ideas for earning the Fitness badge.  Some activities are designed to be done in a patrol or unit, others are designed to be done at home.

Suggestions have been split into ideas for Guides aged under 10 and Guides aged over 10, but feel free to mix and match - as long as it is a challenge for the individual girl!

Under 10

Make two lists - one of things that you do during the week that are good for fitness, and one of things that aren't good for fitness.  Pick something that is good and do it more often.

Be able to dribble a basketball for 60 seconds.

Play any organised sport for a whole season (or at least 3 months).

With your patrol, make up a fitness or dance routine.

Pass a stage in swimming lessons.

Make a healthy snack for yourself.  Or make enough for everyone at Brownies and bring it along.

Throw and catch a ball with a partner 40 times in a row without dropping it.

Go for a penny hike.

Explain how to play your favourite sport or game to someone who has never played it before.

Demonstrate how to use a skipping rope and show that you can skip forwards and backwards.

Over 10

Buy or borrow a pedometer and keep track of how many steps you do every day for a week.  Can you achieve the goal of 10 000 steps each day?

Keep track of the amount of exercise that you do for a week, then make a plan for the next week which involves more exercise.

Learn how to treat some common sports injuries.  There is some information here.

Make up an aerobics routine (to music if you like) with your patrol and teach it to another patrol.

With your unit, have a discussion about mental fitness, and why that is important.

Create a series of athletic challenges for your patrol to complete within a set time (eg. 10 star jumps in 15 seconds, throw a ball with a partner 20 times in 10 seconds).

Go for a penny hike.

Know the importance of stretching - see if everyone in your patrol or unit can demonstrate a different stretch and explain what muscles are stretched.  Visit this website for some ideas and information.

Write down the rules of your favourite sport and be able to talk about 3 people who participate in this sport at a national or international level.
