Here are some ideas for earning the Scissors badge.  Some activities are designed to be done in a patrol or unit, others are designed to be done at home.

Suggestions have been split into ideas for Guides aged under 10 and Guides aged over 10, but feel free to mix and match - as long as it is a challenge for the individual girl!

Under 10

Make a Chinese lantern, following the instructions here.

With your unit, play the Sheep Shearing Game (have a photocopy of a sheep outline for every girl.  Form into patrols.  One girl from each patrol races to the other end of the room and cuts out her sheep using scissors.  If she makes a mistake and cuts the sheep she must call for the 'tar' (a red texta) to be brought by another member of her patrol and she must colour in the cut.  She then continues cutting until she is done.  Then it continues as a relay).

Make a paper doll chain (there are some instructions on this website).

Know how to carry and pass scissors safely.  Demonstrate this with your patrol.

In patrols, see  who can make the longest continuous strip by tearing a lolly wrapper using only your hands.  Then try with scissors and see if you can make a longer one.

Know how to treat a cut caused by scissors.  You can find some information here.

Use your mouth as scissors - try nibbling biscuits (such as Milk Arrowroots) into different shapes.

Try using the other hand than you usually use to do some cutting out.  There might be a prize for the neatest cutting out.

Have a Paper Scissors Rock championship event.

Over 10

Make a shredded beanie (cut 2 30x30cm squares of fleece.  On each square, cut thin strips on 3 of the edges - about 10cm long and 2cm wide.  Tie the two squares together by the strips). 

Try using your feet to operate scissors.

Be able to describe three different types of scissors and what they are used for.  There are some ideas here.

Do blindfolded cutting with a partner - one girl gives instructions to a blindfolded girl to cut out certain shapes.
