BOOKS

Here are some ideas for earning the Books (or 'Open Book') badge.  Some activities are designed to be done in a patrol or unit, others are designed to be done at home.

Suggestions have been split into ideas for Guides aged under 10 and Guides aged over 10, but feel free to mix and match - as long as it is a challenge for the individual girl!

Under 10

Bring in your favourite book to show your patrol, and tell them a bit about it.

Play Fortunately/Unfortunately (see Games section) with your patrol or unit.

With your patrol, ask your leader to photocopy a story book and blank out the writing.  Write down your own version of the story that matches the pictures.  Then read the real story and see if yours was similar or different.

Create a bookmark using whatever you like.

Write a fiction story about a Brownie having an adventure – or draw a picture of what she does.

Write a report about a trip you have taken.

Keep a diary for a week (or draw pictures of every day).

Participate in the MS Readathon.

Read aloud a passage from a book.

Make up some funny book titles that you would like to see written.

Dress up as a book character.

Over 10

Bring in the book you are currently reading and explain to your patrol why you like/don’t like it.

Write a fiction story, poem or play.

Bring in the picture book that was your favourite when you were younger and read it aloud
to your patrol.

Write a non-fiction account of a trip you have taken.

Keep a diary for a week and write something down every day.

Play Fortunately/Unfortunately (see Games section) with your patrol or unit.

Write a picture book and illustrate it.

Research your favourite author and be able to tell your patrol three interesting things about them.

Have a discussion in your patrol or unit about
magazines and how they are different from books.

Make up a book quiz for your patrol to complete.

Participate in the MS Readathon.

Play Mad Libs with your patrol.  There is an explanation here, and an online version here.

Keep track of how many books you read over a month.  Figure out how many were new books, and how many you had read before.
